2025 wig out This year, you are the hero we need to help us continue our mission. By joining our 15th Annual WIG OUT fundraiser, you can become a vital part of the fight against breast cancer, providing support and resources to those who need them most. We invite you to embark on an “Under the Sea” adventure at our 15th Annual WIG OUT fundraiser on Friday, October 17, 2025, at Legacy Place III. Guests will dive deep into their imaginations, don enchanting wigs and sea-inspired costumes, and enjoy a hair-raising night of light bites, drinks, a silent auction, and a costume contest. For 15 years, Check for a Lump has been a beacon of hope and support for people affected by breast cancer in our Arizona community. Unfortunately, breast cancer doesn’t wait and it doesn’t discriminate. It can be a life-altering diagnosis, and can take an emotional toll on the individual and their family. Many people in our community face barriers to care, financial limitations, and lack of resources. Our annual WIG OUT event was born out of the need to create a joyful way to rally support, raise funds, and make a difference in the lives of those affected by breast cancer. Hear from one of our wig clients who needed us during her treatment: "I've been fighting breast cancer for 3.5 years now. . . I thought I could handle not having hair, but it upsets my children. My youngest boy is 8 and he doesn't like for anyone to know that I have cancer. He was so upset when I shaved my head but I had to because the hair was falling out in handfuls. Finances are not at their best right now. It means so much to have the little things - like looking normal and feeling feminine in my wig from Check for a Lump." - Erin Please join us in this new tradition of an autumn WIG OUT costume and cocktail FUNdraiser, where together we’ll create waves of awareness and support for a critical cause. support us by becoming a sponsor Click the button below to learn about the sponsorship opportunities for the Wig Out as well as our other fundraising events for 2025. Striving for a positive mindset each and every day helps me bring my best to our breast cancer community in Arizona and beyond. As a fellow survivor, I can be the light for other women (and men) who are going through breast cancer with support and encouragement, so they know they are not alone. Not only am I a survivor, but I am a mom to one amazing daughter who gives her time to help others, wife & co-survivor to my husband who had thyroid cancer, daughter to amazing parents who instilled the giving and compassionate drive I have, and pet mom to multiple, snuggley, four-legged animals. Bringing our community together to support each other is vital. The great work that we do at Check for a Lump could not be possible without the support of our friends, family, sponsors, donors, and all of our amazing supporters. I'm grateful and excited to work for such an amazing organization and with a great group of women! We truly are making a difference! Laura Pentsa Director of Programs Having survived breast cancer myself, I absolutely love that I can give back and serve others. OUR STORY In 2009, at the young age of thirty-nine, I was reminded by my childhood friend Shelley Sakala, with a playful posting on Facebook to perform a self-breast exam. I did and discovered a lump that turned out to be breast cancer. I was very fortunate in finding my cancer in the early stages and was able to save my breasts and, more importantly, my life. I endured nine months of treatment, including two surgeries, 4 months of chemotherapy and 2 months of radiation, During that time my family and me were showered with kindness, compassion and generosity by our community. We had meals delivered to our home for weeks at a time by friends and strangers. We had friends show up at our doorstep with yellow gloves on ready to scrub our floors. We had neighbors bring by wigs, cards, flowers, and people offering to help with our kids. Not only did I have my physical community but I had an online community on Facebook as well. There was always someone cheering me on and cheering me up when I was at my lowest moments. I was so grateful for every act of kindness that I decided I wanted to do something to give back to my community. I must give God this credit as well, as I felt like he was pushing me on to a path that He wanted me to follow. I also wanted to ensure that I was leaving a legacy that my daughters could be proud of just-in-case . . . and so with the help of another childhood friend, Kate Kunberger, I started Check for a Lump. Our mission was simple. We wanted to motivate other women to perform breast self-exams in the hopes of detecting breast cancer in the early stages. Shortly after our non-profit was founded we discovered that our foundation had great potential. We chose to implement a second program with our funds to directly assist breast cancer patients. Our Wig Out program provides free wigs to women undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer treatment in Arizona. As time went on we continued to educate ourselves and, in doing so, discovered the need for education regarding prevention of breast cancer in our community. We have taken our educational outreach program to the next level with the help of our sponsors, community grants and supporters. We have also formed great relationships with other non-profits, hospitals, doctors, and breast cancer related businesses in our community in order to more efficiently achieve our goals. In the short amount of time we have been in existence, we have established our foundation as a prominent figure in the breast cancer community. We could not have achieved any of this with out the amazing support of our family, friends, and community. Continually, I’m overwhelmed by the generous acts of kindness that surrounds us. I’m also forever grateful for the path that God has placed me upon. Thank you everyone for your support! Together we are making a difference! Live and Give, Holly Rose HOLLY ROSE, OUR FOUNDER
